NEWS: Lt. Governor Zuckerman issues Statement on S.100, an act relating to housing opportunities made for everyone
MONTPELIER, Vt: On Friday, Lt. Governor David Zuckerman released a statement following the successful passage of S.100, an act relating to housing opportunities made for everyone:
“I am glad that there has been such a robust conversation around housing in the legislature this year. S.100 will take us in the right direction by allowing denser development where sewage and water infrastructure already exist, allowing easier development of duplexes and accessory dwelling units, and creating a first-generation homebuyer grant program. These provisions will allow us to build more housing that our state desperately needs and will address some social inequity issues from legacy policies that disadvantaged marginalized communities.
“However, as we continue the discussion on affordable housing, I do hope that we see state policy and resources further adjusted to provide more permanently affordable housing developed. Market rate housing is out of reach for thousands of Vermonters. When we use public tax dollars, we need to be sure that the broader public will benefit for the long run. When the affordability provisions sunset or disappear, then eventually this public money is more of a gift to developers than an investment in Vermonters and our future.”
