Statement of Lt. Governor Gray on Afghan Refugees
Montpelier, Vt. —This afternoon, Lt. Governor Gray released the following statement on the obligation of Vermont to welcome Afghan refugees:
“Like many Vermonters, I’ve watched in disbelief as the events in Afghanistan have unfolded in recent days.
My thoughts are with the countless Vermonters who have worked in Afghanistan over the last two decades as servicemen and women, in humanitarian assistance, human rights, and development.
We have a moral obligation to protect and evacuate the translators, support staff, and countless Afghan citizens who worked to support US and international efforts over the last 20 years, and whose safety is now in question.
I’ve been in contact with the Governor’s Office this week to reiterate that I stand ready to support all efforts made to safely relocate Afghan refugees to Vermont.
As Vermonters, we have always opened our communities to those fleeing conflict and persecution. Now should be no different.
