Vermont's Sustainble Energy Future

April 2,2007

Our energy future is changing before our eyes, as we work towards a sustainable energy future -- one that includes efficiency and conservation first. Weare working to find solutions from our farms and forests as part of the 25 x '25 initiative – a national plan to provide 25 percent of the total energy consumed in the United States from America's farms, forests and ranches by the year 2025 -- while continuing to produce safe, abundant, and affordable food, feed and fiber. This is a great vision for our state.

I will continue to work with farmers on innovative Cow Power projects in our state, and the energy solutions our farmers bring to fruition. These and other biomass projects help add stability and security to our power grid. They help keep our streams, rivers and lakes clean.

I will continue to maintain a relationship with our friends in Quebec, who may provide added energy options for Vermonters in the 21st century.

From appropriate small hydro projects, to appropriate wind power, to ground-breaking work by University of Vermont researchers who might unlock the promise of a hydrogen economy, I will continue to support those who expand our energy horizons. It's the right thing for Vermont, and the right thing for our planet.
