As Vermont state senators passed a bill that would limit local school spending increases to 4% unless overridden by 60% of local voters, Lt. Governor Brian Dubie today proposed a similar limit on the state’s annual spending.
“It is clear,” said Dubie, “that when state budgets and school budgets grow faster than Vermonters’ paychecks, we are on an unsustainable course for the future. Vermonters are already the most heavily taxed citizens in America. It’s time for state government to impose the same spending discipline that we’re asking from our schools.”
Dubie said, “I will be working with my colleagues in the Senate to place a provision in the 2008 budget for a permanent limit on the growth of state spending to population growth plus inflation – roughly 4% per year.”
