July 7,2004

Quebec National Assembly Member Jean Rioux of Iberville will join Lt. Governor Dubie and Vermont State Representatives to discuss long-delayed project

WHEN: Thursday, July 8, 10:00 AM
WHERE: Highgate Springs Welcome Area, I-89 ***
WHO: Lt. Governor Brian Dubie, Quebec National Assembly Member Jean Rioux (Iberville), and Vermont State Representatives Kathy Lavoie (Swanton), John Winters (Swanton) and Norman McAllister (Highgate)

WHAT: The roughly 25 miles of Highway 133 between I-89 at the Vermont-Quebec border and Iberville, Quebec has long been the only “missing link” in fast, safe highway transport between Boston and Montreal. The Province of Quebec’s plans to complete Highway 35 between Iberville and the border have been delayed since the sixties. In May 2004, the Vermont House and Senate passed Resolutions HR.0037 and SR.0032, urging Jean Rioux of Iberville to continue to press for completion of the modern limited-access highway, for reasons of highway safety, economic development and security. On Thursday, Lt. Governor Dubie, and key legislators will present those resolutions to Mr. Rioux, and meet to discuss the project’s current outlook. Following the Highgate Springs meeting, participants will travel north for a press conference in Iberville.

*** From the south, take I-89 north to exit 22. Bear left off ramp & cross overpass. Welcome Center is on right. From north, take 1st exit off I-89, just south of border crossing, for Welcome Center.
