VT Leadership Supports Reforming Gun Laws

22 February 2018

Lt. Governor Zuckerman joined Vermont Attorney General T.J. Donovan, Senate Pro Tem Ashe and Speaker Johnson at a press conference earlier today. His remarks are below. You can watch the entire press conference here.

"I’m proud to be standing together with our Attorney General and the leadership of the Senate and House to begin the process of reforming our gun laws to increase safety in Vermont.

I spend a lot of time talking to Vermonters from all walks of life and take seriously our job of protecting all citizens while preserving our rights. Over the last week I have received many messages, from teachers, doctors, law enforcement, hunters, parents and students. All of them are asking us to do our job and address public safety and the safety of children here in Vermont.

It is time we pass laws that empower law enforcement to remove firearms from those involved in domestic violence and close the loop holes in the background check system. While we know this won’t stop all gun violence, these are proven changes to decrease gun violence while preserving constitutional rights.

I support Senator Ashe and Speaker Johnson and look forward to the Senate voting on S.6 requiring universal background checks and S.221 to reduce the risk of extreme gun violence in the coming week."
